Donna Valverde Headlines UTMB 2015 Speaker and Film Series Finale

April 11, 2015

utmbUTMB-Galveston invited Donna Valverde of Valvisions to speak and screen the internationally acclaimed film ‘HEALING MAGDALENE’ to close its 2015 Speaker and Film Series season. Donna Valverde_guestspeakerThe event was coordinated by Students Together for Service and S.I.G.H.T. , and sponsored by the Office of the President. ‘HEALING MAGDALENE’ is a film that creates awareness about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Although FGM is most prevalent in certain rural communities across Africa, many of us know of someone harmed by this detrimental practice. More than 125 million girls and women alive today have been “cut,” with as many as 2 million suffering through the procedure each year.

kat_Joel_ReichHow it all happened…
The Chair of S.I.G.H.T., Roosevelt Campbell, approached STS to join forces for its Film Series finale. Ironically, STS coordinator, Kat Joel-Reich, had recently been to Houston for the Premiere Showing of ‘HEALING MAGDALENE.’ She recommended ‘HEALING MAGDALENE’ for the close of both the Speaker Series and Film Series season because of its gripping storyline and relevance.

SIGHT_studentsSTS (http://www.studentstogetherforservice.org/) is devoted to providing systematic coordination among the affiliated service organizations in order to increase student and community involvement. Affiliate organization S.I.G.H.T. (Students Improving Global Health Together – https://www.facebook.com/groups/sightutmb/) has a mission of addressing the medical needs of the global community by creating awareness of health disparities in underserved populations. Together the organizations were able to plan and promote a campus-wide event for the finale of the Speaker and Film Series season.
