FGM Debate

January 22, 2018

We are experiencing very hot temperatures now. It has not rained in a while and the air is humid and dusty.  Most of Kenya is dry and Pokot is especially hard hit. The girls are still teaching, but due to the current temperatures, food and water shortage have started to take a toll. During the weekends, the girls go in search of water to stock up for the week. They have gotten used to this lifestyle and are coping despite the significant challenge.

This week there was a heated debate in the country after a certain Doctor (Tatu Kamau) appeared in Court to seek a law prohibiting FGM from being declared as unconstitutional. Her argument was that the law is detrimental as it abolishes a cultural practice that is widespread in many Kenyan communities. Several humanitarian right groups have resisted the move loudly proclaiming that such a move could undo years of progress in the fight for better health for women and girls.
