World Women’s Day

March 2019

We celebrated World Women’s Day on the 8th of March.  It is refreshing to see that with each passing year there is more recognition of this great day. There were lots of messages sent to women to celebrate their status as females, and there was a lot of coverage in the media on the same.

This is a video of a function we attended, which clearly shows that when you educate a woman, you educate a community.

The lady, accompanied by her husband, visited her parents’ rural home in the company of her friends and neighbors. The ceremony was put together to show appreciation to her parents for nurturing her from childhood all the way to becoming one of the most prominent lawyers in the country.

She had very humble beginnings in a rural school where most girls drop out and marry at an early age. This woman beat all the odds and had one of the highest exam pass marks in the country which led to her admittance at the top girl’s school in Kenya. She went on to become a prominent lawyer in the office of the President.

The ceremony was both colorful and tearful. The video shows the ladies from the neighborhood ferrying loads of goodies to her parents’ home as they sang and danced, and adulations filled the air. The women carried the goodies on their backs tied with sisal ropes depicting the sacrifice parents make for their children. No words can describe the pride and joy which beamed across her parents faces.

In recognition of World Women’s Day, much can be appreciated in any and all efforts to educate the girl-child. This month in the Choice Club meetings, we will emphasis and encourage the girls as to the reasons why it is so important for them to appreciate and support each other in every aspect of life.
