The Helen Valverde Scholarship Fund
Valvisions Foundation launched The Helen Valverde Scholarship Fund several years ago in Kenya and more recently in Uganda. The fund provides direct education benefits and room-and-board for girls who have run away from their communities to escape ‘the cut’ (female genital mutilation). Teenage girls who are out of school are inevitably cut and married off long before they have finished their childhood.
Currently, Valvisions Foundation is supporting 21 girls in East Africa through high school – on full scholarships which include tuition and all school supplies. The girls, ranging in age from 13-17, will spend four to six years in high school and then have a chance to attend University.
11 girls are in Shiners High School in Nakuru, Kenya. 10 girls are attending Mount of Olives College, Kakiri, Uganda.
Each year, we work with communities where girls are at risk of FGM to extend the Scholarship program and give more girls a chance to realize their full potential through education. So far, we are working with the Pokot in Kenya and the Sebei in Uganda.
