With the kind of peer pressure and self-esteem issues we have witnessed at schools, parents are happy to have a standard school uniform for all their learners. The school uniform helps make everyone equal. Uniforms reduce peer pressure and help students stay well-groomed and decent looking. The students may not like the uniform, as many prefer going to school in different kinds of attire. They consider the school uniform to be old fashioned and would prefer if it was no longer required.

I was invited to give a talk to a group of Secondary School students on the need to be hospitable and considerate to other children in their school with special needs and those that come from very poor backgrounds. The talk came about because the teachers noticed that a group of students were not being kind and making snide remarks about the unfortunate situations of their peers. The school invited parents to the talk to share with them the concern and to encourage them to instruct their children on being mindful of the less fortunate.

Obstetric fistula most commonly occurs in poor, rural areas of Africa and Asia where the women affected live in dirt-floor dwellings, and lack access to running water and incontinence pads. Under these circumstances, a woman with fistula faces devastating physical and psychological consequences.

A motorbike zooms into the hospital compound. It is a small community clinic that offers basic services for maternity and non complicated illnesses, like coughs and flu. On the motorbike are two women and the motorbike rider. One of the women seems to be in pain; on closer observation, I notice she is pregnant. The motorbike rider and the other woman rush her into the clinic. The workers at the clinic call for the midwife, explaining to her that the patient’s water broke while she was at the market. They suspect the baby will come any minute. The midwife instructs the woman to lie down on a bed as she attends to another young lady who had come in earlier and is already in labour.
